Meet Darbie. She’s my writing critique partner, friend, and tonight, Zumba teacher! I want to share this story with you because I’m so proud of her.
About two years ago we met at a Writers Forum meeting. I was looking for a replacement officer on the board and she was just finding her way out in public after wrestling through a nasty separation. She took my position just to be around people again and we started getting to know each other better through our shared love of writing for teens.
Then we found something else we both loved: Zumba. One night I invited her to a class. What a blast. The Latin music, the choreography, the sheer fun of being in the moment with our jingle butt scarves. Truly golden. We talked about dreams and life writes and what the world outside nasty divorces looks like. Darbie set a goal: “I want to teach Zumba. I also want my divorce to be done.”
Thirty pounds later, a single woman, and a rockin’ Zumba teacher, Darbie is sharing Zumba with her students at the high school where she teaches and scouting out other venues to share her passion for this fun. She’s also dropped 30 pounds in the process and gained a happy glow all over that shines from the stage.
This is such a good example of feeding your soul with what you love instead of feeding your mouth with things that contradict your goals. Way to go, Darbie! You’re an inspiration to us all!
