Metaphysical Goes Mainstream: Reiki Me

mandala3Tomorrow, Newsweek magazine’s special March 1st edition on Spiritual Living will cover all aspects we are seeing in the collective including a few of my favorites: adult coloring books, your dreams (the ones you have while sleeping), and Reiki. The issue will be loaded with everything you should know to metaphysically keep up and promises to reveal the secrets to peace and happiness.

It’s interesting how fast this change is flowing. Here’s an anecdote. About a year ago, while studying Thomas Troward in one of my spiritual practitioner classes, I had this mad impulse to create and color mandalas. I didn’t know much about mandalas other than I thought they were pretty. For no clear reason, my intuition grabbed me by the hand, dragged me to Barnes and Noble after class, and insisted I hunt down coloring books on mandalas to learn more.

Sales clerk, who noticed me searching high and low for mandala anything: Can I help you?

Me: Ummmm…do you have mandala coloring books?

Sales clerk: This is the weirdest thing. You are the 7th person to ask for those today. Is there like a class going on somewhere?

Me:  Ummmm…well, I AM taking a class, but it’s not on mandalas. I can’t explain the others.

Sales clerk: Weird. Well, we only have two. Follow me and I’ll show you.

We walk to this dingy little corner of the store and she hands me two off the bargain rack.

mandala4Me: I’ll take them!

Fast forward to yesterday. I walk into B&N to find an 81/2 x 11 journal (which they no longer carry, btw) and the entire center island is on mandalas. Adult coloring books fill the store. It’s really astounding. In just one year, mandalas and coloring books have taken prime real estate (and a lot of it!) in B&N.

And it’s not just this one aspect that is exploding. There is other evidence that previous naysayers are waking up to what just a minute ago they might have thought was too wooey. One of my new finds in this area is Reiki, a form of energy healing. I am no stranger to receiving Reiki, but I have only recently been inducted as a Reiki practitioner and learned, well, they’re everywhere quietly practicing away.

I know about energy because I’ve studied such things since my interest was piqued in high school by the Transcendentalists. Einstein backed up my ideas that we are all energy in a stage production where we act like matter. And I had always been drawn to learning more about Reiki for these reasons, but whenever I would ask, I would feel the person describing it to me in a very unsatisfying way.

I’ve now discovered why, and I think of it as a reaction to metaphysical phenomenon in general. There is a layer of fear and suspicion which manifests in secrecy from both those who embrace these ideas and those who want to suppress them. It goes back to Salem and our puritanical roots here in the USA. It goes to a resistance humans often feel towards change. The unknown, for many, is scary.

But here’s the thing. On this planet, we are meant to be joyful and happy, not fearful and scared. If someone told you that’s not true, I call bull shit. The world wasn’t created so we could suffer, and wallow in our story, and kvetch about this, that, and the other thing. While we may not control every event that goes down, our attitudes are our choices. Our lives are of our making, just like the mandalas, and we color them how we choose.

Back to Reiki. This is an amazingly calming form of energy work. Here’s what it looks like. A client lays on a massage table (fully clothed) on their back and the practitioner offers, through a process of intention and hand positions, an energetic healing. It’s a smoothing out process of energy that gets stuck. That’s important, because when energy gets stuck, it causes illness, sickness, emotional gunk, etc. Think of it like a pipe under your sink. When you don’t clean it out, the water drains slower and eventually starts backing up. Reiki is the Draino to clear your pipes.

Those given credit as founders of Reiki are Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata, but it is believed to have much more ancient roots in Tibetan history. One of the reasons Reiki tends to be shrouded in secrecy is that it is a form of healing passed on from Reiki Master to Reiki Master, with a long history dedicated to forbidding the writing down of symbols. This remained true until the post-internet era.  Some Masters today even cringe at the thought of putting symbols into form in the physical world, including my Reiki Master. Out of respect for her, I won’t post them here but they are easily tracked in a Google Search. Instead, you get a mandala. Boom!mandala2

Each Master has their own unique flavor which is, of course, influenced by the Master before them. The longer they practice, the more their fingerprints comes through to the next Master they train. Both Masters and practitioners use Reiki energy to help others keep their energy from getting stuck. Like anything, there’s a process, but the clear working really depends on the intuition of the person offering and how well they keep themselves open to Source flowing through them. In my experience, this works both on yourself, on someone in front of you, and on someone a remote distance away. The practitioner is simply a conduit for that transmission in all scenarios.

As are most of these concepts, really. They are tools in your spiritual toolbox. And why do you need a toolbox? For Project Bliss. To experience peace, joy, love, and happiness on this amazing planet you’ve been gifted. To live your fullest, best life for the good of yourself and all those who love you. And besides that, because it’s just stinkin’ fun.

Years ago when groceries were bagged in paper, around the holidays they were printed in holiday motif intended for children to color. At the time my children were babies, I noticed a pull to do something with those bags. During nap time I pulled out the crayons and paper bags and would color, it was relaxing and I didn’t understand why. Who knew?!

Visionary! Here’s what to trust: the best ideas have not necessarily been endorsed by the masses and often by the time they are, they’re watered down. Your intuition is the star!

I used mandala design in my high school math classes. The math component was that the measure of the angles of a mandala add up, in a logical way, to 360 degrees. The measure of the angel selected for one segment of the mandala has to divide into 360 evenly. The next segment is a mirror of the first. I loved learning about the artistic and creative part of my math students.

What a great idea, Joanne! When I taught 2nd grade in Manhattan Beach, we loved incorporating art into lessons like this. And mandalas add a whole new dynamic that goes beyond art. Good for you for bringing them into your classroom!
